GEO and AEO Audit

A GEO and AEO audit: can AI assistants fetch, read and quote your site?

Generative engine optimisation and answer engine optimisation are two names for one job: being the page an AI answer draws on. This audit checks the six things that decide it, with weights fixed before we start.

What The Audit Checks

Six checks, weighted and frozen.

Together they make the AI Visibility score, out of 100. The weights never change during an engagement, so a rise cannot come from moving the goalposts.

AI schema and structured data · 25%

Hidden labels that tell software what each thing on a page is: a price, an author, an answer to a question. Without them an assistant has to guess.

AI crawler access · 20%

Whether GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and the rest are allowed in by your rules and actually served by your server.

llms.txt · 15%

A plain text file that tells AI assistants what the business does and which pages hold the answers.

AI content readability · 15%

One H1, clear headings, and passages that answer a question on their own. On one site a single template fault left 21 of 39 pages without an H1.

AI content gap · 15%

The questions your buyers ask that no page on your site answers yet.

AI review signals · 10%

Third-party reviews and how you answer them. Gated on business decisions, not on anything we can ship, and we say so in the report.

Two Levels

Start free. Go deeper when you want the real answer.

The free check reads your rules and tests your homepage. The baseline audit tests every page.

Free AI visibility check

About two minutes, no access needed. Reads your robots.txt rules for 11 AI crawlers, requests your homepage with each crawler's user agent, checks llms.txt, the sitemap and homepage basics, and crawls up to 50 pages. Run it now.

Baseline audit

Every URL in your sitemap fetched and scored on both rubrics, SEO Health and AI Visibility. We check, one assistant at a time, that each crawler can actually fetch your pages, not only that your settings say it may. You get a gap register, each finding marked as ours to fix or yours to decide. Request it.

Why Both Levels Exist

The rules said yes. The firewall said 403.

A US healthcare analytics company, baseline frozen 15 July 2026, re-measured 18–19 August across all 39 sitemap URLs.

  • The firewall returned 403 to OpenAI's and Anthropic's search crawlers on every page
  • The trigger was a generic bad-bot rule matching the substring "searchbot"
  • The client's monitoring tool reported all sixteen AI crawlers as accessible, because it read the robots rules instead of sending requests
  • AI Visibility 18.35 → 66.35 after the fixes; AI crawler access 45 → 82, llms.txt 0 → 85

FAQ

GEO and AEO audits: common questions

What is a GEO or AEO audit?

A GEO (generative engine optimisation) or AEO (answer engine optimisation) audit checks whether AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews can fetch, understand and quote your website. It covers AI crawler access, structured data, llms.txt, and whether your pages answer questions in passages an assistant can lift with your name attached.

Is GEO different from AEO?

The names come from different people describing the same job: being the source an AI answer draws on. We use one audit for both, scored on the same six checks. Four separate pages for four acronyms would be doorway pages, so this is one.

What does the free AI visibility checker test?

It reads your robots.txt rules for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, Applebot-Extended and other AI crawlers, checks your llms.txt, sitemap and homepage basics, and crawls up to 50 pages. It also requests your homepage once with each crawler's user agent and reports what your server answered. That is our checker's request, not the real crawler's, so the baseline audit goes further and checks, page by page, that each crawler is actually served.

Why can robots.txt say yes while the AI crawler is still blocked?

Because a firewall or CDN can refuse a crawler before robots.txt is ever consulted. On the engagement we publish, the firewall returned 403 to OpenAI's and Anthropic's search crawlers on every page, while the client's monitoring tool reported every AI crawler as accessible because it read the robots rules instead of sending requests.

How is AI visibility scored?

Out of 100, from six weighted checks: AI schema and structured data 25%, AI crawler access 20%, llms.txt 15%, AI content readability 15%, AI content gap 15%, and AI review signals 10%. The weights are frozen before work starts. It measures readiness to be cited. It does not count how often an assistant mentions you.

How much does a GEO or AEO audit cost?

The AI visibility check is free. The baseline audit on the full two-score rubric is the first step of SEO Autopilot, which is ₹20,000 a month (about US$230) for one site with no setup fee and no minimum term.
