NEET 2026 Eligibility: Age Limit, Qualification and Number of Attempts
The complete NEET 2026 eligibility criteria — age, marks, subjects, attempt rules — written plainly for students and parents making this decision right now.
The short answer
To be eligible for NEET 2026 you must: (1) be at least 17 years old as on 31 December 2026, (2) have passed or be appearing in 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology from a recognised board, and (3) score at least 50% in PCB if you are in the general category (40% for SC/ST/OBC). There is currently no upper age limit and no cap on attempts. The rest of this guide explains exactly what those rules mean in practice — and where students get tripped up.
NEET 2026 Eligibility Criteria — At a Glance
These are the criteria NTA publishes in its official notification. The full notification is at neet.nta.nic.in, and you should always verify against the current year's notification before registering.
| Criterion | General / EWS | OBC / SC / ST | PH (General) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum age | 17 years by 31 Dec 2026 | 17 years by 31 Dec 2026 | 17 years by 31 Dec 2026 |
| Upper age limit | None | None | None |
| Qualifying exam | 10+2 passed or appearing | 10+2 passed or appearing | 10+2 passed or appearing |
| Required subjects | Physics, Chemistry, Biology / Biotechnology, English | Same | Same |
| Minimum marks in PCB | 50% aggregate | 40% aggregate | 45% aggregate |
| Attempt limit | No cap (as of 2026) | No cap | No cap |
One point that causes regular confusion: the 50% requirement applies only to your 10+2 board results — not to NEET itself. Whether your NEET score earns a seat depends on the cutoff for the college and category you are applying under, which is a separate question.
Age Limit for NEET 2026 Eligibility Criteria
The minimum age for NEET 2026 is 17 years as on 31 December 2026. This means a student born on or before 31 December 2009 is eligible to appear for NEET 2026. A student born on 1 January 2010 would be 16 years and 364 days on that date and would be ineligible — they would first appear in NEET 2027.
The upper age cap was removed
In 2017–18, the Medical Council of India tried to impose a 25-year upper age limit for general category candidates (30 for reserved). The Supreme Court struck this down in 2018 as unconstitutional. That ruling stands. There is no upper age limit for NEET as of 2026, regardless of how many attempts you have made previously.
When to check age before choosing BiPC
If a student is in Class 9 and their parent is asking which stream to choose for Class 11, the age criterion is almost never a factor. Where it matters is for students who may have a gap year, repeated a class, or are considering appearing after completing a different degree. In those cases, confirm the birthdate against the 31 December cutoff for the year you plan to appear.
Academic Qualification — Which Boards and Subjects Count
For NEET 2026 eligibility criteria, you must have passed or be appearing in 10+2 (Class 12) from a board recognised by the Association of Indian Universities or the respective state government. For Hyderabad students, this means Telangana Board of Intermediate Education is fully accepted — check the current list at bie.telangana.gov.in. CBSE students can confirm their board's status at cbse.gov.in.
Subjects required in 10+2
You must have studied all three of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (or Biotechnology in place of Biology) as separate subjects in 10+2. English must also be a subject. There is no requirement that these subjects were in your compulsory group — optional Biology is acceptable for students who took MPC and added Biology as an additional subject.
Important: Students in pure MPC without Biology cannot appear for NEET. They would need to pass a supplementary Biology exam from a recognised board first. This is uncommon and administratively complex — if your child wants to be a doctor, BiPC is the correct stream from the start. See our guide on which stream to choose after 10th.
Appearing vs. passed
Students currently in Class 12 may register for NEET 2026 as "appearing" candidates. If allotted a seat, admission is conditional on passing 10+2 with the required marks. NTA sets a deadline — usually June or July — by which original mark sheets must reach the allotted college. Students who fall below the marks cutoff after appearing provisionally are ineligible for that year's allotment, even if they cleared NEET.
Open schooling and NIOS
Students who passed 10+2 through the National Institute of Open Schooling are eligible, provided the subjects match. NIOS students must have studied Physics, Chemistry and Biology individually — not through a composite science option. Confirm your eligibility at ntaonline.in before applying.
Marks Required in PCB — How the 50% Is Calculated
The 50% marks requirement for general category is calculated only across Physics, Chemistry, and Biology — your English marks and any optional subject marks do not count toward this figure. If you scored 45% in Physics, 60% in Chemistry, and 48% in Biology, your PCB aggregate is (45+60+48)/3 = 51% — you are eligible.
The eligibility cutoff has nothing to do with NEET's competitive score. Eligibility to appear and competitiveness to win a seat are separate bars. General category government MBBS seats in Telangana have cleared at 620+ in recent years — far above the 50% PCB marks that qualify you to appear.
Number of Attempts Allowed for NEET 2026
As of 2026, there is no limit on the number of times you may attempt NEET. The Supreme Court struck down the 3-attempt cap in 2018. NTA attempted to reinstate a 6-attempt cap in 2021; courts stayed that order and it has not been reimposed since. NTA publishes the rules for each year in its official notification — always verify at neet.nta.nic.in before making assumptions.
The honest assessment
Unlimited attempts sounds like a safety net. In practice it is a trap for families who do not plan clearly. Each additional attempt year costs Rs 60,000–2,00,000 in coaching fees plus opportunity cost. I have seen students attempt NEET four times with declining scores — not because they lacked intelligence, but because they did not change their approach. If you have not improved from attempt 1 to attempt 2, a third attempt without a material change in study method or coaching quality rarely helps. That decision is financial and psychological, not just academic.

NEET 2026 Eligibility Criteria — The Hyderabad Context
Meeting NEET eligibility is a low bar. Getting a government MBBS seat in Telangana is a different matter. Telangana reserves 85% of government seats for students who completed intermediate education in the state. The remaining 15% goes to the All India quota, which is more competitive. Telangana's state seat eligibility rules are at tsche.ac.in.
What Hyderabad students need to know about scores
Telangana government medical college seats (Osmania, Gandhi, Kakatiya, etc.) have been clearing at NEET scores of 600–650+ for general category in recent years. The top private medical colleges in the state clear around 550–600. There are about 6,800 MBBS seats in Telangana across government and private colleges — government seats number roughly 1,600. At Hyderabad's top NEET coaching institutes, the average qualifying score in their top batches is around 580–640. See our guide to best NEET coaching in Hyderabad for a full breakdown.
Coaching timing and Class 11 start
NEET preparation in Hyderabad begins on day one of Class 11, not after 12th boards. Students who wait until Class 12 to start serious coaching are already behind — the integrated two-year programmes at Narayana, Sri Chaitanya, and Nine Education are structured so that the entire NEET syllabus is covered by the end of Class 11, with Class 12 used for revision, mock tests, and the board exam. Start your preparation timeline reading with our NEET preparation guide for Class 11 students.
For NEET coaching fees in Hyderabad — which range from Rs 60,000 to Rs 2,00,000 per year — see our NEET coaching fees guide. Scholarship tests at most institutes run January to March and can reduce fees by 20–80%.

What is the age limit for NEET 2026?

Is Biology compulsory for NEET 2026 eligibility?
Yes. Biology (or Biotechnology as an alternative) must be a subject in your 10+2. MPC students without Biology cannot appear unless they have passed a separate Biology exam from a recognised board. Biotechnology is accepted as a substitute for Biology in the eligibility check.
